When you think of Christmas trees, you probably picture something standing in your living room, decked with lights and ornaments, maybe 6 to 8 feet tall. But back in 1950, the city of Seattle took Christmas to sky-high levels—literally.

A Record That Still Stands

In 1950, the Northgate Shopping Center in Seattle, Washington, unveiled what would go down in history as the tallest Christmas tree ever displayed. This wasn’t just any tree—it was a Douglas fir that soared to a staggering 67.36 metres (221 feet) tall!

To put that into perspective, that’s:

  • Taller than a 20-story building

  • Nearly the height of Big Ben’s clock tower

  • More than 36 times taller than the average household Christmas tree

A Holiday Spectacle

This colossal tree was the centerpiece of the shopping center’s holiday celebrations. It attracted thousands of visitors who came just to see the awe-inspiring display. Adorned with lights and decorations (though nothing like today’s LED-laden marvels), it stood as a towering symbol of post-war optimism and festive joy.

At a time when most Christmas trees were modest and homegrown, Seattle made a bold statement that captured imaginations around the world.

A Record That’s Never Been Broken

Despite advances in engineering, technology, and tree farming, no one has officially beaten this 1950 record. It remains a testament to the scale and spirit of mid-century American celebrations.

While artificial trees continue to grow in size and decoration, nothing quite matches the natural majesty of that Douglas fir in Seattle, standing tall and proud as the tallest real Christmas tree in history.

A Giant Reminder of the Holiday Spirit

More than seven decades later, the 221-foot Christmas tree remains an enduring piece of festive history. It reminds us that Christmas is a time to think big, dream boldly, and celebrate together.

So this holiday season, when you decorate your tree, just remember—there was once a tree so tall it kissed the winter sky.
