1977 – The First Christmas Range

Yankee Candle began experimenting with seasonal scents in the mid-1970s, but 1977 is widely regarded as the first proper holiday collection.
These early fragrances were simple: pine, cinnamon, “holiday spice,” and a basic vanilla-cookie style candle.

At the time, the idea of a candle smelling like a specific Christmas experience (e.g., tree, baking, mulled spices) was almost unheard of. Yankee Candle effectively created the seasonal candle market.

Why They Became So Popular

Yankee Candle leaned heavily into:

  • Strong scent throw – Christmas candles were always among their most powerful.
  • Nostalgia – scents that reminded people of baking, trees, or cosy nights.
  • Giftability – the large “apothecary jar” design became a classic Christmas present.
  • Limited editions – people collected the seasonal jars every year.

By the 1990s, Yankee Candle Christmas scents were a global tradition.
