The former child star revealed that he’s open to revisiting the Home Alone franchise if the right script comes along, and he even has a story concept that flips the original film on its head.
Speaking recently about the beloved holiday classic, Culkin said he would consider stepping back into the role of Kevin McCallister, the clever kid who turned booby traps into Christmas legend. But this time, Kevin would be all grown up — and struggling with a very different kind of break-in.
A Reversal of Roles
Culkin’s pitch imagines Kevin as a single or recently separated father trying to reconnect with his own child. Instead of fending off burglars, the adult Kevin finds himself locked out of his own home, with his son setting traps to keep him away. The twist reimagines the franchise’s signature slapstick through the lens of a strained relationship, turning the house into a metaphor for the emotional distance between father and son.
“The idea isn’t about recreating old gags,” Culkin explained in his remarks. “It’s about what the house represents — a broken bond that needs to be fixed.”
For fans worried about endless reboots, the concept offers something more character-driven than the typical nostalgia revival, emphasizing warmth and reconciliation rather than pure physical comedy.
A Legacy Hard to Recreate
The original Home Alone films — released in 1990 and 1992 — cemented themselves as seasonal staples, launching Culkin into global stardom and helping define holiday movie culture for an entire generation. Later entries and reboots failed to capture the same magic, contributing to long-running skepticism about revisiting the franchise.
Even original director Chris Columbus has said the lightning-in-a-bottle quality of the first films is nearly impossible to reproduce. Still, Culkin’s thoughtful, emotionally grounded approach might be one of the first revival ideas to gain genuine fan interest rather than eye-rolling.
Nothing Confirmed — Yet
For now, the concept remains purely Culkin’s wish list. No studio deal or script is in motion, and no official sequel has been green-lit. But with audiences increasingly drawn to legacy sequels that thoughtfully re-examine beloved characters, the possibility of seeing an older Kevin McCallister onscreen no longer feels far-fetched.
As holiday nostalgia ramps up each year, any mention of Home Alone tends to stir excitement — and Culkin’s idea brings just enough freshness to spark real curiosity. Whether Kevin McCallister ever returns to the big screen remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the world hasn’t forgotten about the little kid who once defended Christmas with a paint can, a blowtorch, and a whole lot of attitude.
