A company called 'Fitz Studios' run by James Fitzpatrick is taking outdoor Christmas decorations to the next level and as a homeowner it doesn't actually require that much effort on your part.
Take a look at this incredible Grinch production:

They create a projection movie based on a digital map of your house exterior, and you then project it on to your house with a fairly decent projector and get yourself some speakers for the related sound. Sure, there will be some expense, but it looks fantastic and doesn't require weeks of set up time.
The elements in the projection are customised around the focal points of your house allowing your house to become part of the visual display. It's so effective as you can see in the image above.
The company has also created a 'Nightmare Before Christmas' projection and many other Halloween related shows.
