Keystone Camp

It is believed that Christmas in July started in 1933 at a girls camp called Keystone Camp in North Carolina. It is celebrated on the 24th and 25th July each year.

The first Christmas in July included Carol singers, a Christmas tree, Santa Claus, presents and fake snow.  This tradition carries on today.

Recently other countries have adopted this new festival with pubs, night clubs and bars holding events. Especially countries who celebrate Christmas in the Summer, such as Australia, who wanted something to brighten up the winter months.

The phrase "Christmas in July" is believed to have been popularized by a 1940s American film called "Christmas in July," where a man mistakenly believes he has won a large cash prize and decides to celebrate by buying gifts for everyone. This film contributed to the cultural embedding of the phrase and concept in the month of July.
